Ask ten farmers how to increase milk production and nine will tell you to feed more concentrate. It is the most intuitive answer available, and it is wrong often enough to be expensive.
Why more concentrate stops working
A cow has a finite rumen and a finite appetite. Past a certain point, adding concentrate does not add nutrition — it displaces the fibre the rumen needs to function, drops rumen pH, and pushes the animal toward sub-acute acidosis. Yield flattens, butterfat falls, and the feed bill keeps climbing. The animal is eating more and returning less.
Bypass protein: the actual lever
Ordinary dietary protein is largely broken down by rumen microbes before the cow ever absorbs it. A meaningful share leaves the animal as ammonia in urine — protein you paid for and she never used.
Bypass protein is treated so it survives the rumen intact and is absorbed in the small intestine, where it goes directly toward milk synthesis. In practice this means you can raise usable protein supply without raising total intake. A ration with 30–40% of its crude protein in bypass form does more for yield than simply feeding another kilogram of the same feed.
Energy without the acidosis risk
Peak lactation creates an energy gap that no amount of fodder can close. Rumen-protected fat is the standard answer: high energy density, released past the rumen, so it does not interfere with fibre digestion or depress butterfat. Two to five percent inclusion is typical.
The most common mistake we see on farm visits is a high-yielding animal on a maintenance ration. She makes up the shortfall from her own body reserves, and you pay for it later in fertility problems.
Get the arithmetic right
The industry formula is simple and most farms do not follow it:
- 1.5 kg per day for body maintenance
- plus 400 g for every litre of milk produced
- plus 500 g per litre for buffaloes, whose higher milk fat costs more energy
A cow giving twelve litres needs roughly 6.3 kg of concentrate a day. Most farms feeding "generously" are feeding four.
What to watch over eight weeks
- Daily yield per animal, recorded — not remembered
- Fat and SNF percentages from your collection centre slips
- Body condition score, so you can see whether she is milking off her back
- Whether the trough is empty; refusal means a palatability problem
Change one thing at a time and give it a full eight weeks. Feed changes take a lactation cycle to show their real effect, and farms that chase weekly numbers usually end up switching brands for no reason.
